Tuesday Tutorial – Herman the German Friendship Cake

5th – 11th August is National Friendship week in America so we thought we’d adopt it and show you a brilliant bakey way to show your nearest and dearest that you care.

Meet our Herman the German Friendship Cake

He may not look like much now but we’re going to nurture him over the next 10 days then divide him into 4 and share him with our 3 best friends. No doubt they’ll think he’s just a bowl of goop and bubbles but Herman is much more than that…

Right now he’s what is known as a sourdough “starter mix” who will need feeding and stirring before being baked into a lovely big sourdough cake. We wanted to give you plenty of time to make your own Herman before friendship week so we used this simple recipe (courtesy of www.hermanthegermanfriendshipcake.com) to bring him to life, just in case none of your friends have a Herman just yet…

What You Need

Firstly, make sure you have the following:

  • 5oz plain flour
  • 8oz castor sugar
  • 1 packet of active dry yeast
  • Half a pint of warm milk
  • 2 fl oz. of warm water

What You Do

  1. Dissolve the yeast in warm water for 10 minutes then stir.
  2. Add the flour and sugar then mix thoroughly.
  3. Slowly stir in the warm milk.
  4. Cover the bowl in a clean cloth.
  5. Leave in a cool dry place for 24 hours
  6. Now proceed from day one of the 10 day cycle.

Once you have your Herman its time to start the 10 day nurturing process (click HERE for the instructions!) Its very important that Herman isn’t left in the fridge as this will actually kill him! He enjoys warmer climes as you can see from our Herman, kicking back and taking advantage of the lovely weather we’re having…

If you’d like to join us in treating friends to a completely unique and thoughtful present this National Friendship Week you can find out lots more about Herman’s origin and all about how to care for him HERE

Hi, my name’s Hannah, I am a previous parent to Herman and have made it my mission to document his journey from here. Currently a BA Hons Book Arts and Design student at London College of Communication I am taking this journey on as my final project and hope to collate a family photo album of Herman in all the new families in all the new homes he finds himself in.
Once you have taken him in as your own and raised him until the end I would be so grateful for a family portrait to add to the collection. Just send a photo of yourselves with Herman in whichever baked form he takes with you to my email: hannahmfincham@gmail.com.
I will let you know when it is done so you can keep an eye out for your family portrait!
Thank you and good luck with your temporary parenthood.
